Reviews of Gardener’s Tale

* Absolutely loved this book. It has the perfect balance of adventure, romance, suspense, drama, etc. and it is very nicely narrated. I find it impossible to jump right away to another novel after finishing this one.

* Wonderful historical novel. Ms. McGreevy has found her niche!!! She has created characters that you can care about, that are fully rounded out as people. As I was starting the story I was reminded of such classics as “Tom Jones, a Foundling” and “The Vicar of Wakefield”. I enjoyed the book thoroughly and can highly recommend it to any reader. Sensitive topics are handled with care and there are plenty of plot twists to keep you thinking about what is next. The main character’s development across time as he grows and changes to become the man he can be is wonderful to behold. I can hardly wait for her next book!!!!

* Catherine McGreevy layered details, plot, and subplot to create a tantalizing trans-atlantic tale. I loved how she created plot twists I didn’t see coming, events that made me sit up and pay attention. She didn’t do it just once or twice. She did it through the entire book. Just when I thought things were looking up for Tom Westerly, wham! Something else would happen. In the end, Tom comes full circle, back to his roots, creating a satisfying conclusion to this well told story.

* I just finished The Gardener’s Tale. It kept my attention through out. Well crafted in the time period. Great story, and I recommend it to those who love a page turner.

* From the first page of The Gardener’s Tale, author Catherine McGreevy captures the authentic setting, speech, and class structure of pre-industrial England. Tom West is a laborer on a large estate, and this is the story of his rise against the impossible to become a wealthy landowner in his own right.

* This historical novel has romantic elements, but it’s uniquely told from the point of view of the hero. Tom is instantly endearing, and I found myself wanting every good thing for him from the opening chapter with the scene of a runaway carriage, to the ending of the book where he creates a symbol of his new life.

* This was a great look into both American and British history from a “commoners” perspective. Well told, I was anxious to read it until I finished. I love to see it as a movie!

* The first scene had me interested in learning more about Tom … What a fun ride. I enjoyed the old style feel, that led me through twists and struggles. The ending was satisfying and romantic … I became enthralled with Tom and the other interesting characters.

* McGreevy weaves together historical facts from both sides of the pond, creating a contrasting chronicle with the skill of a masterful storyteller. I wish that Tom’s story could go on and continue in a second book.
My recommendation to anyone who enjoys historical fiction is to read The Gardener’s Tale.

The first scene had me interested in learning more about Tom that turned quickly into transforming this reader into the story. What a fun ride. I enjoyed the old style feel, that led me through twists and struggles. Even though the ending was satisfying and romantic, I felt the last two scenes were rushed and read more like a book instead of how enthralled I became with Tom and the other interesting characters.
